Thou wouldst not let me go away; Still thou forcest me to stay. O might the secret pow'r, Which will not with its captive part, Nail to the posts of mercy's door My poor unstable heart! The nails that fixt thee to the tree, Only they can fasten me: The death thou didst endure For me, let it effectual prove: Thy only love20 my soul can cure, Thy balmy bleeding love.21 Now in the means the grace impart, Whisper peace into my heart; Appear the justifier Of all that22 to thy wounds would fly; And let me have my one desire, To taste thy love, and die.23 Page 16 24First appeared in Resurrection Hymns (1746), 12-13 (8). Hymn VIII. On the Resurrection.24 Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore: Mortals, give thanks, and sing, And triumph evermore; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. () Jesus, the Saviour reigns, The God of truth and love, When he had purg'd our stains, He took his seat above: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o'er earth and heaven; The keys of death and hell Are to our Jesus given: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. He sits at God's right-hand Till all his foes submit, And bow to his command And fall beneath his feet: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. He all his foes shall kill,25 Shall all our sins destroy, And every bosom fill26 With pure seraphic joy: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. On the Resurrection.27 Jesu, shew us thy salvation, (In thy strength we strive with thee) By thy mystic incarnation, By thy pure nativity: Save us thou, our new-Creator, Into all our souls impart Thy divine unsinning nature, Form thyself within our heart.
